Why do I need a diamond certificate?

A certificate is like a passport for your diamond and it is issued by an independent professional body with the vital information about the stone attributes (DNA). This covers the 4C's,the Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat and the certificate can be said to be the "5th C". The 4C's are the universal standard used to evaluate the quality and value of all diamonds. The certificate provides the security ensuring you are purchasing your diamond as stated.

Grading laboratories such as GIA and EGL measure and certify diamonds sent to them from wholesalers and retailers. This is a valuable document that can be used in the case of loss as you can used this report with your insurance to ensure your replacement diamond is of the same quality and value. Certificates are not appraisals as they do not contain any information regarding the price of the diamond.

Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) was founded in 1931 by Robert M. Shipley opening the first U.S gemmological laboratory in LA. GIA is considered to be the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, coloured stones, and pearls. A public benefit, non-profit institute, GIA is the leading source of knowledge, standards, and education in gems.

European Gemmological Laboratory (EGL) was founded in 1974 by Guy Margel in Belgium. Subsequently, a number of laboratories were opened around the world including in the US in the 1970s and South Africa in 1980, and later Europe, the far East and Israel. In all operations, Margel has devoted himself to increasing professionalism in the field by providing reliable, trustworthy certification for consumers and industry specialists alike. EGL certificates are recognised around the globe for their accuracy and integrity, defining industry standards in evaluation and appraisal.
